And I Thought Daylight Savings was Bad

Flag of China

Joy of joys, another weekend of mixed up sleep. It doesn’t matter, of course, because we’re down to the last two races of the season, and the championship is still a fight to the finish.

The schedule for Shanghai, and therefore Live Commenting is as follows (all time in BST):

Day Session   Thread Opens   Starts
Friday Free Practice 1   02:30   03:00
Free Practice 2   06:30   07:00
Saturday Free Practice 3   03:30   04:00
Qualifying   06:30   07:00
Sunday The Race   07:00   08:00

Live Commenting will be available, and I’m looking forward to seeing you there, assuming I can keep my eyes open for long enough. Don’t forget, though, if you’re much too sensible to stay up all crazy hours of the night, then F1 Minute will have a quick sum up of the day’s events, and F1 Digest will take a closer look.

Whats all this about the GPDA wanting to talk about hamiltons driving style this weekend? Are they going to try and get an agressive driving style banned? “you must all follow in single file and never move off the racing line - any attempt to overtake will be regarded as dangerous”

Seems like two very separate issues, and just using Hamilton as an example. I don’t think it’s supposed to be the witch hunt that it blatantly looks like.

I don’t see it. Trulli’s upset about blue flags, and Webber about the braking areas. It’s been a while since the GPDA had something to get their teeth into.

Both of them are quite insistent they’re not bashing Hamilton, so do you think they’re just protesting too much?

Whats all this about the GPDA wanting to talk about hamiltons driving style this weekend?

At the time of the incident (Me might be able to trace it) I said the other drivers would be very unhappy with Lewis’ start at Fuji. It was incredibly dangerous. The British Press may call all the penalties unfair, but when the GP drivers start complaining about bias I will take notice. It is their safety, penalties are there to ensure no-one gains unfair advantage or unduely risks other drivers. As Stuart has confirmed the press are under no obligation to report truthfully about Formula One - their purpose is to sensationalise so as to sell more copies (or get more internet hits for their advertiser) and to provide job security for F1 journalists.

Back to the GPDA, clearly they are unhappy about incidents like the Fuji start and if we respect the safety of the particpants we should respect the GPDA for raising the issue. If the GPDA is critical of Lewis then he needs to accept this as part of peer review. Sadely Lewis is unbearable arrogant and this does not help matters.

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association will be discussing the driving style of championship leader Lewis Hamilton during their meeting on Friday at Shanghai. Several drivers are concerned that Hamilton’s dangerous driving style might lead to a crash and therefore they have agreed to put it on the agenda of the GPDA.

Mark Webber said in the Chinese paddock: “The braking areas are an issue because you cannot move around in the braking areas like that. We lost a marshal at Monza (2000) when there were guys moving around in the braking areas. That is what we want a chat about.

“I am not smashing Hamilton, but it is about how you move on. His respected colleagues are sometimes saying, ‘mate, it doesn’t need to be like that all the time’.”

For one they’re far too expensive for the class of car it’s categorised in. I have to agree with Clarkson and say that when you buy one, all you’re really buying is the badge.

    Sorry :P

Other than being ridiculously ugly *especially this one which was white*, too small inside, far too expensive, gutless engine *in this one anyway* and also being surprisingly uncomfortable on anything other than very smooth roads due to run flat tyres - nothing. If it didn’t have the BMW badge on the front it wouldn’t sell anywhere near as well.

OK - I guess it is all relative the car I drive is even more expensive for its size, even more gutless and has the ride of a pogo stick but at least it does not break down everyday the way my MG did.

Why did you have to say that? That proves he is Senna-esque.

In Senna’s first year at Lotus his utter belief in himself and his religious views were getting a lot of coverage. Much like Lewis everything he did or said was examined in infinite detail. Nigel Roebuck to my mind has written two utterly outstanding columns. His normal standard is very good but two stand out above all the rest an I have quoted them endlessly since. One was about his phone call with Gilles after Imola 1982 which was the most incredible piece of writing about an incredible situation but the other is not so well known but was about Senna’s Hamilton-esque attitudes.

He wrote that he dreamt that he had died and gone to heaven. There he was met by Saint Peter who asked his name and profession. On being told that he was a motor racing writer Saint Peter told him you are going to love the track we have here. It makes the Nurburgring look like a Tilkedrome.(OK he didn’t use Herman’s name)

Instantly Roebuck and Peter found themselves on a grassy bank looking over the most incredible circuit. They were on the outside of a plunging, dipping right hander and as they watched a red Ferrari with the number 27 on it arrived side ways at high speed with the wheels locking. It was Gilles. For it is written. Just as Gilles was sorting the ill-handling car’s corner entry a black and gold Lotus with a yellow helmet arrived at unfeasibly high speed and tried to go round the outside of the sacred Gilles. The driver put a wheel off the road and half spun just as Gilles got on the throttle and 12 screaming cylinders pushed him on to the next braking zone.

The Lotus driver selected first gear and completed a spin turn before chasing after him. Roebuck turned to Saint Pete and said that he did not know Senna was dead. Saint Peter replied “That wasn’t Senna. It was Jesus Christ. He just thinks he is Senna.”

It seems that Lewis is Senna-esque.

The story was struggling to come out somewhere. While Lewis does have disregard for the safety of others, I am not sure it is all this - there must be some jealousy - the kid has had about the best car (as in reliability and speed under wet and dry conditions for near two years) these last year and equal (???) number one status and this year clear number one status. This is a dream setup that only Schumacher senior has had recently and it counts for a lot.
