Live Commenting: China - Free Practice 2
It was a slow start to the morning for most teams, with the usual format of installation laps followed by a long lull in the action. However, when it got going, the normal four led the way for the majority of the session.
Hamilton looked to be on fine form, the only man to get into the 1:35s, four tenths faster than the two Ferraris. The red cars were perhaps struggling a little, or maybe not too worried about times. It’s always hard to tell.
We saw quite a few excursions into the grass, from Barrichello, Hamilton, and Raikkonen, whilst Trulli’s morning session was shortened abruptly. He spun the Toyota slightly, but managed to keep the car out of the wall, returning to the pit lane for a check up before returning to the track. He didn’t do particularly well for the rest of the session though.
The track is supremely wide, with plenty of run off area, so incidents may be few and far between for the first few sessions. However, we’ve already seen Piquet repeat Lewis Hamilton’s gravel trap escapade from last year. He managed to get out safely, but it looks as though the pit lane entry will definitely be one to watch out for.
It’s all about 5live in the wee hours of the morning, but there’s live timing is always there (working much better recently, don’t you think?), and of course we’ll be in the Live Commenting Live… Thing.

well if its fairly hot then the harder tyre would be better as with the soft tyre you’d find it heating up and wearing quicker than normal because of it. So in effect the hard tyre is a more durable soft tyre with more grip.

From what I know, depending on the temperature you want:
Hot - hard compound
Medium/in-between - medium compound
Cold - soft compound
The most grip you could get from tyres is soft ones on a cold track.

I’m updating the practise-qualifying-race comparitor. Here is its summary at this point:
Qualifying
Out in Q1: Both Force Indias and both Hondas (so lou and I can be miserable together)
Q1/Q2: Glock and Vettel
Solid Q2: Coulthard, the Williamses and Kubica
Q2/Q3: Heidfeld and Bourdais
Qualifying Top 6
Massa-Hamilton
Kovalainen-Alonso
Raikkonen-Piquet Jr.
Race Top 6
Hamilton-Raikkonen
Alonso-Massa
Webber-Sutil*
* - I think I’ve found the real problem with this; the finishing rate has too much influence on the result the comparitor gives, and Sutil has had just over half the finishes of his nearest rival.

Force India are keeping Fisichella and Sutil
The FIA are putting in standardised engines (and it does look like bye-bye all bar one manufacturer, unless the supplier is kind enough to allow rebadging in name only)

Sutil deserves a better car next year - he’s dragged that heap around faster than it really should go at several points this year. Generally before being stuffed by Ferrari.

Oh dear 75% the same as my first thoughts of selection - better change it quick! Seriously I thought by including Hamilton and Alonso in my Fantasy Team I will put the evil eye on these two drivers and they will take each other out so Massa and Kubica can remain in the hunt!

Just did another gathering of data from over the season, this time on reliability/finishing rate for each team. Up to and incuding Japan, I counted each retirement for every team and then divided each value by 32 (counting both cars doing one race each over the past 16 rounds) and then multiplied by 100. I then subtracted the answer from 100 to work out the percentage. Here is what I found.
1) BMW - 94% finishing rate - 2 retirements
=2) McLaren - 88% finishing rate - 4 retirements
=2) Williams - 88% finishing rate - 4 retirements
=4) Toyota - 81% finishing rate - 6 retirements
=4) Red Bull - 81% finishing rate - 6 retirements
=6) Ferrari - 75% finishing rate - 8 retirements
=6) Honda - 75% finishing rate - 8 retirements
=8) Renault - 66% finishing rate - 11 retirements
=8) Toro Rosso - 66% finishing rate - 11 retirements
10) Super Aguri - 63% finishing rate - 3 retirements (from 8 races)
11) Force India - 47% finishing rate - 17 retirements
All values were rounded up where necessary.

Apparwently they say…
“The provider will set out a detailed design and will either provide engines in full working order or the detailed designs to allow competitors to build their own standardised engine.”
This is rubbish - sorry but I had no idea that is was actually going to be enforced.

The only way they could keep the manufacturers interested would be if they gave every team a base unit and then they’d be able to do their own development on it. That way each team can call their engine their own since they’ve done the work on it. But maybe to make sure teams don’t go all out to gain an advantage, each team is given the same set budget for engine development. Not sure how they’d be able to regulate it, but I think that’s the only way you’d be able to keep the manufacturers happy in some way.

It is just Max setting out his negotiating position. Deliver what I want or you get this. Standard engines wo’t happen.

agreed. and just like the timing of the silverstone press release, it was designed for maximum effect.

I have a horrible feeling standard engines could happen, simply because Max seems to be determined to get his own way on absolutely everything. The sort of leader who thinks it is wise to demolish the raison d’etre of the majority of its sponsors in order to persuade them to take action to stay is no leader at all.

you could well be right. it’s a bit unfair that they’re supposed to be discussing this next week, yet he’s not given fota a chance to offer any alternates.
that’s kinda why i think it’s all about the PR. make as many headlines as possible, while he has the chance.

We might as well profit from this everyone. Help me dig up a supply of Life W-12 engines to offer Max for a “reasonably-priced offer” to ensure that absolutely nothing else matters excpet that by the shear luck of the draw, the Life W-12 engine inthe back of so-and-so car is the only that lasts the fully race distance.
That would be perfect. The results could be far more random than Chrisitne’s Fantasy Racers picks…
