Live Commenting: Brazil - Free Practice 1
It’s the 31st October, and Halloween, meaning everyone should be thinking about pumpkins, trick or treating, and fancy dress. Not us! Today is all about Interlagos and what’s going to happen this weekend. Free Practice has never been more important, as we try to gain the slightest inkling of who’s going to have the upper hand over the weekend.
If it rains, however, which is looking more and more likely (60% chance at the time of writing), we will probably not see an awful lot of action. Therefore, we will just have to make assumptions based on what we already know.
We know that Hamilton and McLaren are feeling quietly confident, but aware that no race weekend is entirely straight forward. Word on the street is that the team are bringing a new rear wing and other aerodynamic bits and pieces, even at this late stage of the game. It could be a risky business, as rear wings are integral to the performance of the car. However, I can’t believe they would jump in without whole-heartedly believing it will make them faster, so that will be something to look out for.
Meanwhile, in the Ferrari camp, Massa says he’s completely optimistic that he can win the title. I suppose you’d have to be, wouldn’t you? We’ve made a lot of the fact that he knows his only job is to win, and the rest is up to fate. Raikkonen seems a little bit more realistic about the fact, saying that Massa will need a complete miracle to clinch the title from seven points behind. Presumably he’d prefer that lightning doesn’t strike twice, and he remains the comeback king in championship showdowns.
Of course there are plenty of other drivers hoping to do well in Brazil. Alonso and Kovalainen have a great battle going on for 6th place in the championship, with Alonso just two points ahead. The Renault team have achieved their goals for this year, so Alonso can go out there and do what he does best. In the wet weather, we’ll be keeping an eye on those at the back trying to move forward. Sutil tends to perform well in damp conditions and he’ll be desperate for a point in this final race. Vettel scored his win in the rain, and Barrichello picked up a podium when the weather turned.
There’s all that and more to look forward to, but first we have to get ourselves set up. We’ll be in the Live Commenting Live… Thing, watching Live Timing and consuming ITV’s online stream. The BBC promise to be covering FP1 on Sports Extra, and we’ll be putting pics and links in drop.io throughout the session. The action kicks off at mid-day GMT, so I’ll see you in the comments.

Morning everybody!
This is my home race weekend. Unfortunately I won’t be able to be there at Interlagos, but next year I’ll be there for sure. I went to Interlagos 5 times this year, to watch a whole lot of different races, from GT3 to Superclassic races (more than 30 years old cars), so it’s kind of odd knowing that a lot of action is happening there and I’m here, stuck at work just 5 miles from the circuit
But that’s ok, you lose some to win some others
The weather here in Sao Paulo has been very weird this week. At this time of the year it is usually hot all day and at the end of the afternoon a heavy rain falls from the sky. But this week it is way chiller than expected, and at least twice a day a light rain comes, it rains for a little while (15, 30 minutes) than it goes away.
I expect it to rain during the race, but just a light rain, probably they won’t even need the intermediates. Just to make things a little bit slippery
Today I’m at work so I won’t be able to comment too much. But tomorrow and during the race I’ll be able to be sidepodcast correspondent around here

Laranjinha = small orange - the most challenging corner of the track IMHO
Bico de pato = Duck’s beak

Now why the corners have those names:
Laranjinha - in the original track, this corner was named Laranja (orange). laranja in portuguese is a slang term for coward, like the “chicken” slang in english. In the new track they shortened this corner a little bit, so it went from Laranja to Laranjinha
Pinheirinho - When they built the circuit, there was a small pine tree in the inside of this corner. Now the small pine tree is actually a big pine tree, but the name remais. It is possible to see the tree in the footage sometimes, depending of where the camera is.
Curva do lago - At the original track, there were two lakes araound this section of the circuit, (so the name Interlagos = interlakes).

- sección artificial de Tilke
