What are you doing during the Off-Season?

For the past week or so we must have answered this question (or various incarnations of it) a hundred times already. I get the impression when most people ask what we’re going to be doing with our newly acquired free time, they half expect us to say “take a holiday”, or something equally relaxing.
Clearly they haven’t met Christine.
Last year, at a time when not that many people had heard of Sidepodcast we managed to work every single week between F1 seasons, and that included Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. This year, given a heightened level of listener interactivity, what are the chances she’s planning a break this time around?
Exactly.
Which is why, despite there being absolutely no racing action for over four months the girl has a packed programme scheduled for everyone. If you tuned in last year, you’ll no doubt be familiar with many of these concepts, but I’ll quickly run through our plans anyhow.
Stuff to look forward to:
- The 2008 Season Review (big plans on this front, more later).
- The Sidepoddie Awards (listen to last year’s show for a general idea).
- Best of Sidepodcast (last year’s audio roundup was a bit of a corker, this year will no doubt be more interactive).
- Taxing questions in the form of Sidepodquiz.
- More interviews with the Sidepodcast community.
- Regular episodes of Sidepodpanel (as many as we can possibly fit in).
- An alternate Christmas message.
- A trip to Autosport International.
- Karting against other the F1 bloggers.
- Apparently we’re going on tour.
- More nostalgia than you can shake a stick at.
Have I missed anything from that list? Can I squeeze another link in anywhere?
Hopefully that’ll keep you entertained, it’ll certainly keep us busy. Now you know what we’re up too, what are your plans for the off season?

Hmm, what am I doing during the off-season? Well:
- Working, at GAME and quite possibly Pizza Hut. Yes, two jobs at once, need the cash
- Moving to a new house in Wymondham and working on it a lot
- Season 10 of Real Life BATracer, this time in Indycar since I had my SuperLicence downgraded. That means having to fit roleplays into every session on top of all that.
And of course spending time around here with you lovely lot

November 8th, 2008 at 12:59Scott Woodwiss said:
Ahh, not enough roleplays in on time, but it’s my own fault I guess. I tended to fall in and out of sync with it. One day I’d be on the ball with them and the next I just couldn’t be bothered.
But then again, could you blame someone who’s done two seasons with Force India and in that time only scored 3 points? Still, a solid season in IC with all the roleplays done will see me back in F1 I’m sure
November 8th, 2008 at 13:07Scott Woodwiss said:
Actually while I’m on the subject, and it’s that time of the season again, anyone who might be interested can visit ftlog.org/rlbatracer. I will strongly point out that while you might be absolute rubbish playing BATracer itself, your performances in the game aren’t what team managers look for. It’s your quality and quantity of your roleplays that gets you noticed. So while you might have a dismal season in IndyCar for example, if you roleplay in every session and make sure they’re not just a couple of lines, then even you can find yourself in with a shot of an F1 drive.
Also, if someone of you think you haven’t the time to post roleplays, there are people on there who hold down full time jobs, families and a whole lot more and still make sure their RPs are in on time. That’s the level of commitment that some people have.
And anyway, I’d always be able to give any of you guys tips on how to play the game itself anyway. I’ve been around in the RLB since Season 5 and we’re not pretty much at the end of S9.

End of year is our normal break (viz summer holidays in these austral parts). So I have no lectures to give until Jan next year! So it’s research and time to further develop our spatial web-servers (we are contracted to provide all spatial information on Biodiversity for South Africa via a public web portal) and provide the web portal (design and hosting) for Global Invasive Species Programme . Next year I am introducing our MSc in Geo-informatics in all seriousness so lots of work in planning the research projects for each student (about 10 will be starting) and hoping to get the research and training exchange programme underway with the Germany Aerospace Centre. If there is time I might overhaul my blogging and podcasting sites which I developed for student teaching.

i think alianora said it would be about £40 (which reminds me i gotta pay her), so am assuming we’re kart sharing.

I would be up for it, for sure…
When the local pub i drink at did a few years ago we divided into teams of four for the GP. It casts about £40 each then.

If you share a cart between four, you get about ten laps each. It doesn’t sound much but your arms are aching by the end of it.
You also get overtaken by twelve year old kids who are slamming in the fastest laps. At Milton Keynes their lap times were about six seconds quicker than our fastest ‘boy racer’ team member. He was gutted, lol.

The karting is an individual event not sharing. £40 is not an unusual price for that kind of event.
I haven’t driven a kart in years. Must sneak in some practise before then.

Daytona in Milton Keynes charged about £150 per cart for their GP race which was about fifty-three or-so laps. If it’s £40 per cart for a race where you have your own cart for the entire race in Birmingham, than bring it on!. Every man/woman for themselves sounds great to me!. Ye-ha…!
Would there be a prize for the winner from sidepodcast? and the winner should have to make a speech as well, lol.

it’s not a sidepodcast event by any means. we’re just gatecrashing alianora’s party

There will be no prize other than bragging rights. No doubt the winner will have to make a speech athough Jordan has set a high standard.

Better start writing my speech then, lol

Is it me or has this karting lark got a momentum of its own now?
It will be individual racing and we will have the track (and bar) to ourselves. The age restriction is such that nobody will have to worry about being embarrassed by twelve-year-olds - there are separate events people can organise for under-12s and under-16s, so us grown-ups will only be able to embarrass each other (and any under-16s who happen to come along to spectate).
The race is a short train ride from Autosport International, which is being held that weekend. Saturday attendees may have to leave slightly early to make it on time, but with regular trains between Birmingham International (where Autosport is) and Birmingham New Street (which is not very far from Teamworks), hopefully you won’t have to miss much. If you plan to attend on Sunday, you may want to talk to me because I may be able to get a discount on the hotel through Teamworks.
If anyone wants to use trains to get around and wants help sorting out timings, I am happy to help with that. I am likely to be coming via train myself unless I get a lift.
The structure is that everyone will do heats and then the top 8 karters will compete in the grand final. The whole thing is done in two and a half hours, so I suspect we may not get as long in the karts as the Daytona brigade, but after a long day looking at Autosport stuff you might not want to be karting for masses of time.
There are going to be prizes for the top three karters - they come from the kart track with the package. No details as to what the prize may be, but I suspect there may be a small podium ceremony - either by the organisers or in the bar afterwards
We may have to skip the champagne bit in the latter case though…
The event is £40.50, but only karters are expected to pay this (as they’re the only people Teamworks are charging per person). Spectators will be able to watch from the bar. This strikes me as a suitable place for a studio for “retirees” to speak to Sidepodcast (the unofficial media providers of the event) and for victory speeches.

Alianora, not sure if i’ll be around at the karting anymore as i’m not sure what’s happening with getting home and anything (as i live 3 hours away by train) then again i have a friend who lives i birmingham i may stay with.. i’ll know nearer the time though.

What station do you need at the other end, lou? I could look up timetables for you if you like. Though staying with a friend would probably be better for you after a long day walking round Autosport and karting round Teamworks.

Can I be the boring old guy here and say that if you two are going to discuss transport arrangements you take it offline and use e-mail? I don’t like the idea of young women making information like this public.
Apologies for being old and boring but safety first. You may now return to the usual mayhem.

Sorry, Steven. Lou, could you send me an e-mail please?

No need to apologise Ali. I just want you two to be safe and I can’t help but higlight safety issues when I see them. Sometimes when I discuss safety in F1 people think I am using it as an excuse to support a particular driver but I have spent so much of my career dealing with safety and I have been involved in road safety out of work that i can’t help analyse and highlight risk.
I was going to suggest that you skype each other but since Lou’s computer doesn’t like skype and Ali’s skype refuses to believe the internet exists you may not be able to contact each other before January.

I’ve emailed Lou with train suggestions (I used Directgov to look through some alternative ways of getting back - the four-train method was pretty amusing…). I might have to send a modification in mid-December when the new timetable comes out, but I hope that not too much will change.
