As if they Could Look More Ugly

Scott pointed out in the comments earlier this morning, that frequent F1 video uploader yossidlr has come up with the goods once more and provided some fantastic shots from this weeks Barcelona test.

Sadly, YouTube has pulled its favourite party trick and squished video out of proportion, making some bad looking cars, look a little bit worse. Thankfully, all is not lost though, as if by magic an anamorphic version has appeared (to plagiarise a line from Mr Benn).

Ahh, that looks… oh, it doesn’t really help does it?

who’s funny idea was it to make my practice italian this morning? he said “somewhat dangerous”…i think i’ll need to relisten to what he’s talking about but his body language wasn’t really suggesting it was too serious. he was also talking about contracts for next year. I’ll try to give a better translation if i get a chance later.

even for non-german speaking persons it quite straight forward. interesting is that nich has to say, that when he pushes the button he gets just over 80 extra horsepowers for up to 6 seconds.

I know a bit of german, but I think I might just turn the sound off on that one so I don’t get distracted.

Nah. Do not have a Commerial Rating. Do not have the “bread” for one. Ticks me off as you need one a Commerial rating to fly the historial aircraft that this airport: http://www.warplane.com

The Commerial Pilots say I had my “Mental Breakdown” a long time ago when I became an Glider/Single-engined Instructor for the Air Cadets…. Do not why, but the students always seem very interested in killing themselves and their instructors.

AS an Air Force Reserve Pilot, I get some nice flights from 1/2 way between Toronto and Montreal to very strange places that might be famaliar to you Steven: Prestwick, Leuchars, Kinloss, Lossiemouth and Buchan for refueling and on to Kandahar….

Never been to Kandahar. Prestwick is my local airport though. Buchan I have never heard of but the other three normally have RAF in fron of their names.

So do you see yourself as a Spitfire pilot or do you prefer the Starfighter.

There is a guy on GP Wizard you would have a lot in common with. He restores war planes in Ohio. http://www.historicalaircraftsquadron.com/index.html

it’s really ugly (although i disagree with you about the recent year bit) i thought the F1.08 was one of the prettiest cars ever (but that’s my opinion too)
i’m surprised that they didn’t use Walrus nose (FW26)- nose hole combo i thought that would be quick (or is it banned?)

I don’t think it is banned but i have a vague memory of reading somewhere that the crash test limit has been increased since that car raced and it would be difficult to pass the test with a walrus nose. One of the reasons no-one copied Ferrari’s holy nose last season was the difficulty in passing the crash test with a chunk of nose structure missing.

Yeah, well, why land a Hercules with a full payload at the local flying club’s grass field when you can use the Military Bases of friendly nations?

So do you see yourself as a Spitfire pilot or do you prefer the Starfighter.

Good question. I actually have 3 hours flight time on the CF-104D (Starfighter Two-seat)in my logbook, countersigned by my uncle would was the commanding officer of 1 Canadian Air group at the time, under the “2nd pilot or passenger column) So you can called myself a real “Widowmaker” jock.

On the other hand, my nickname for the mermaid girlfriend is “Spitty”, short for Spitfire (From the definition of “Spitfire”) so I am sure I have logged a few thousand
hours with that type, if you catch my saying…. :P .

I think I would feel safer in a Spit. The Widowmakers had the glide characters of a 300 pound dumbbell, if anything went wrong with the single engine it was designed around.

Was the Starfighter the plane that originally had the ejector seat that sent down rather than up?

And the non-aviation buffs can now conclude why the pilots called it the “Widowmaker”.

That was the case for the F-104 and F-104A models. Think that by the time the C model joined NORAD the ejector seats where shooting upwards. By the time the “G” was NATO standard issue the seat had to be shooting upwards or there would not be a living ex-Starfighter pilot in NATO…..

I remember being told about this plane by a colleague who had been in the RAF. The idea was that if the ejector seat dropped there would be less load on the ejectee but several pilots were planted in potato fields and the like because they went down when they expected to go up. After the change was made there were some pilots who regularly switched between old and new versions and some of them were planted in potato fields head first.

A little while ago I tried to defend the 09 rear wings but BMW Sauber have really done an admirable job of making it as ugly as sin. The other cars were not quite so bad, but still not pretty. Jenson seemed quite happy so there is hope of closing gap between the teams. I also disagree that all BMW Sauber F1s are ugly as I also thought the F1.08 was one of the prettier cars.

As far as I could tell, it’s only BMW and Williams that have shown us their interim cars so far right?

It is ugly as sin, but we don’t even know if this is BMW’s final car anyhow. There’s a radical difference between the nose of the BMW and that of the Williams which is much more 2008-looking. These two design both can’t fit into the regulations can they? I suspect the cars may look a little different to this come the starting grid in Aus.

Christ, can you imagine a Ferrari looking like this?
