Daily: 20th November 2008

It was the final day of testing today which saw some lopsided Ferrari cars, some Renault braces and Vettel on top once again. That was good stuff. Now we get to sit back and try and analyse everything we saw. It’s going to be particularly difficult because everyone was running different strategies and we don’t have any idea who was actually fast. Nevertheless, we will do our best.

Formula 1 related discussions:

  • Bourdais seems to be pretty annoyed about the way his test went, he’s now saying that it’s going to come down to the money in the end.
  • Sutil says he’s not feeling threatened by Pedro de la Rosa, which is hardly a surprise because he finished last for the second day in a row.
  • The Red Bulletin looks like it’s on the way out. Boo.
  • Also, how can we get Bernie on Sidepodquiz?

Non-Formula 1 related discussions:

  • There’s a new commenting feature available. Use it carefully, it’s brand new and still in the alpha stage.
  • We’d still quite like your nomination votes. It’s still the nominations, people, imagine how much fun we’ll have once it gets going.

Naturally, there is no reason to feel limited by what I have listed here. We want to hear what you’ve got to say about anything F1 and about the world in general. Get talking, and I’ll see you in the comments.

Disneyland drops out of the race to host the French GP:

    http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns20986.html

The company Lagardere Sports and Disneyland Paris have abandoned their project to hold the French Grand Prix, saying that the event is not economically viable. The plan was for a race in 2010 but it seems that the local government was not willing to come up with the funding because of fears that the local population would object to the event. This means that there is not going to be a French Grand Prix in either 2009 or 2010.

The project was headed by former world champion Alain Prost and was one of the six that were in competition for the event. The deal was for Lagardere to come up with around $80m in finance with Disney providing the land.

The latest rumours suggest that the project that will now become the favourite is the one in departement of the Yvelines, to the west of Paris, in the valley of the River Seine, at Flins. This is understood to have the support of French Prime Minister Francois Fillon.

Another failed project for Prost, but more importantly, no French GP for a while. If we lose the British GP as well for 2010 (assuming Donington doesn’t pull it off), that will leave us with quite an odd calendar.

Some more news, this time from Pitpass:

However, when asked by a reporter for Montreal radio station CJAD about his "unreasonable" demands, said to be $175m (Can) over the next 5 years, plus advertising and attendance revenues, Ecclestone said: “Unreasonable compared to what?

“We do business worldwide and nobody else thinks we’re unreasonable,” he continued. “We’ve got a queue of people that want races. So we can’t be unreasonable.”

Canada is a typical example of the quandary that the sport finds itself in. Whilst popular with fans and drivers, it is proving ever more difficult to meet Formula One Management’s financial demands. On the other hand, there are many countries, particularly in the east, where governments and entrepreneurs are only too happy to pay up in order to become part of the F1 dream.

“Everyone in Formula One loves Montreal,” said Ecclestone. “I said (to the organizers) you can come to my office, pull any contract out of that drawer for all the overseas races, take any one of them, cross out the name and put your name, and that’s what we’ll do. Because what was offered [by] them was less than we get anywhere else in the world.”

That said, he refused to go into any detail regarding Montreal’s offer.

As the issue rumbles on, with both sides accusing one another, the real losers are the fans, particularly in Canada, indeed, north America, which is missing from the F1 calendar for the first time since 1958.

Asked if he would like to see Montreal back on the F1 map, Ecclestone replied: “Of course we would… we didn’t want to lose it.”

Maybe Honda needs a driver with a “ragged” style of driving the car, like JV, so that at worst, the cameras will have a hard time focusing on the car and resulting blur will be more pleasing to the viewer’s eyes than these ugly cars!

    6. Trulli
    7. Bourdais
    8. Glock
    9. Webber
    10. Raikkonen

I put Kubica and Alonso joint 1st as they were the most consistent and won in bad machinery.

Hamilton and Massa – too close to call as both drove brilliantly one week and rubbish the next.

Vettel is next, and a bit lower down because he started the year poorly and he’s a rookie

Trulli is next because he did well in an average car and kept the motivation up.

Bourdais next because he would have had a much better year if it wasn’t for the bad luck and bad penalties given to him.

Glock next, a young hotshoe, fast and talented but had two of the year’s biggest accidents.

Webber is next, flashes of brilliance but couldn’t get the most out of a potentially race-winning car. Silverstone really was a bad race for him in my book.

Finally Kimi Raikkonen, who I mention purely because he had the talent to win the championship, and until he crashed drove brilliantly at Spa, but let himself down week after week. He is only here because we know he can do better.

Well, there’s my Top 10 for 2008. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your arguments!

Too hard to separate drivers and their cars for me.

    haha. you’re always welcome though.

sounds like you’ll have to be on r.g’s team to help make up for his points shortfall.

We seem to have a lack of volunteers for Sunday’s sidepod panel. People can’t be fed up with it already. Volunteers can sign up at the link below.

I don’t know why it is. Since the show started there has never been a shortage of volunteers. I would assume that most of the regular panelists haven’t visited the wiki for a few days. Either that or they want to make sure there is a slot for Kathi.

Hehe, right now you might think I am stupid, but if I go as a panelist on SPP you will KNOW I’m stupid :)

Most people think they will come across badly but everyone who does the show is there to enjoy it and no-one is there to put anyone else down. Look how nervous Lou was and how she thought she would struggle but she was really good. You should try it. It really is great fun. Besides if you are struggling for something to say there are people like Scott and me who can talk all day and fill the space.

Just catching up with the comments i’ve missed today

My driving style suits ugly cars – Jenson

Tis good to know that things might be looking up for Honda… although what is said at the beginning of the season and what is said at the end is often very very different..

At the risk of making Lou angry, does that mean that Jenson’s driving style is also “ugly”….

Am too tired to be angry ;)

Since Lou is going to read this I will say that it is because his style compensates for the ugliness.

    Good answer :)

Just to prove that ugly cars are nothing new I ‘borrowed’ a few pics of cars that were greeted with horror by previous generations. Have they grown on you or are they still ugly.

    - ugly
    - ugly
    - ugly
    - ugly
    - not as ugly
    - ugly

BBC are to show live streaming of their shows soon. Be able to watch F1 races now in deepest, darkest Britain. (Theres a joke here but I’m not gonna say it.)

yay, if they show F1 that will be great (although i will probably still stick to watching the race on tv). The reason i say ‘if’ is because ITV have been offering a similar service this year, but only for some programs. It will probably be different cause it’s the bbc and they are so much better than ITV. :)

Has anyone here posted their top 10 drivers yet?

    1. Alonso
    2. Massa
    3. Vettel
    4. Lewis
    5. Kubica
    6. Heidfeld
    7. Kimi
    8. Rubens
    9. Webber
    10.Rosberg

The astronauts doing today’s spacewalk are being loaded into the airlock now so the spacewalk should start some time within the next hour.

oh no i missed it :(

I have a new definition for your dictionary
yuk-er-roo, adjective to describe how bad the new front wing on the 2009 spec cars is

    haha :D

I am glad that I am not the only one schoked to see a certain someone of Lou’s top ten list. Considering that I factored in a baseline performance of how well the car should do before I start rating drivers, Lou would be happy to know that her certain someone made my top 10. My list is on tomorrow’s diary entry.

i feel bad he isn’t in my list now… tbh I didn’t really think a lot about him when deciding, shows you how tired i am. i may have to correct the list in the morning in today’s thread…
