The Greatest Karting Competition in the World

After all the excitement of Autosport International, we’re now heading towards Teamworks Karting in the centre of Birmingham. The plan is to meet up with a host of familiar faces and thrash out some laps on the track.
Attendees at today’s inaugural F1 Bloggers & Friends karting event include Alianora (who organised the entire thing wonderfully), Steven Roy, Andy Taylor, plus myself and Mr C, whilst Jackie joined me trackside. We were also joined by Neil, Stuart and Scott from another website.
A practice session, followed by seven heats of qualifying, led up to the race itself, and we saw plenty of action. One particular corner caused plenty of trouble, whilst we had a few bangs, prangs, cheers and tears. Okay, no actual tears, but we even saw a few appeals to the official ref (a computer who wasn’t having any of it), and to top it all off, we had a black flag.
Only the Sidepodcast crew could turn a simple karting event into a politics filled evening Max would be proud of. There will be plenty of pictures forthcoming, although Andy has already posted his. We’ll also have a full round up of the night’s events in a forthcoming podcast. Stay tuned.

if you don’t mind, your pics should maybe also go onto the wiki, or maybe add a link to there to smugmug. t’otherwise they may get buried forever in the comments.

i think we need a who’s got the worse sporting injury competition.
i have a bucket-seat shaped bruise on the back of my ribs. two sore feet and my head appears to droop forward like it’s been carrying a heavy weight,
anyone else? {me – 74 comments ago}
I have two decent-sized bruises on the insides of my knees where they hit the steering column hard (from separate incidents, I might add). My armpits also ache somewhat. Considering what I did in the race, I think I came out rather well…
I will say that the standard kart seat was perfect for me. There was a larger seat size for people who needed it, but I don’t think anyone from our brigade asked for one.
Dad has already said he needs to try and fit the minimum criteria to get into next year’s race

By the way, Dad gave me some feedback on the venue. He thought the organisers and karts were great, though he would have preferred a slightly wider track.

I have a lovely big bruise on my spine which is three times the size it had to be because to use Jackie Stewart’s phrase ‘for a Scotsman of medium stature’ the accelerator pedals on two of the karts were such a stretch I was almost out of the seat to get them on the floor so a lot o my weight was on my back.
My right bashed against the steering column so often in the same manoeuvre that I have a lovely big bruise there.
My forearms are ba it sore from hanging on to the steering over all the bumps while in the advanced stages of hypothermia. i was speaking to Scott afterwards and both of us at one point did three consecutive heats and at the end of the third one both of us struggled to straighten our fingers.

January 11th, 2009 at 16:08 #199 - Steven Roy said:
The track was a bit narrow for the karts. i am sure their timing/scoring system was a bit off but i loved their attitude. When we had the briefing and he said if you stand on the steering arm and break it wou will go straight on and not fininfh the race. A lot of places would have said you will have to pay for it etc.
I have to admit when he said the karts were electric I thought they would be hopeless but they are as much fun and similar performance to petrol engined karts.

christine’s being very polite about us being behind schedule. we’re late because everything is happening in slow motion, because everything hurts when i move,

January 11th, 2009 at 16:10 #201 - Steven Roy said:
No it wasn’t.
I got out my (sorry his) kart and was told I wa in the next heat. When I checked the karts for it I noticed my number wasn’t there just as Mr C pulled in behind me with my number on his kart. So I had to explain why it wasn’t me that was in the next heat and they went and changed the scoring.

My armpits have stopped aching. Apart from the two bruises from hitting the steering column, I’m fine.
I totally missed the stewarding issue. Glad to hear it was resolved in an amicable manner.
The karting numbers identifying people were at the front and were:
1 Andy Taylor
2 ScottyD
3 Neil P.
4 Neil P.’s friend
5 Alianora La Canta
6 me
7 Steven Roy
The numbers at the back were identifying the individual kart, presumably for the benefit of the organisers.
