Now that the podcast is up, I will reveal that the reason I had a >10 minute fastest lap in the final is because the kart to which the timer was attached was not the one in which I completed most of the race. In fact, I did not even complete a lap in it because it broke before that point.

how did it break? {me – 3 comments ago}
I was involved in a collision on the first corner. I thought nothing of it until the second corner, when I tried turning left and nothing happened. I panicked and ended up spinning.
Then I went to the next corner, started sliding… …and watched it turn into a spin as opposite-locking left didn’t work. Braking didn’t work either, so I had to rely on the barrier stopping me. This was when I worked out that this was more than inept driving at work.
I explained matters to the marshal who pushed me out of the wall and then slowly drove back to the pits, spinning at the left-hand turn preceding the pit lane despite my slow pace because left wouldn’t kick in. Somehow I managed to get down the pitlane and went to the end of the pit garage.
Then I explained matters to the pit lane mechanic, who decided to let me re-join in another kart since I hadn’t even completed a whole lap by that point. I returned to the track four laps down, but at least I was in a kart that worked…

He told me I wasn’t bad even after I managed to spin several times in the same heat. At least he was honest enough to add that my main fault was inconsistency…
Seriously, I think he was trying to make sure nobody’s spirits dropped so low that they walked out or started driving in a sulk (which is usually slow, barrier-whomping, or both). With people like us who were too motivated by the presence of our friends to do either, he had an easier job than he expected
Also, he told me that when he started, he was doing 45 second laps round the place, so the fact that everyone was sub-30 seconds despite none of us having seen this track before (as far as I know) probably gave him more faith in us than we had in ourselves.

Thank you very much for the kind offer. However, I didn’t lose out by an amount worth complaining about because nearly all the karters who dropped out paid their first instalment before doing so, and none of them asked for their money back (in fact the two who I asked if they wanted their money back because they had what to me seemed excellent unforeseen reasons for doing so refused to have the deposit returned). The others bailed before paying the deposit. Since the spectators weren’t charged anyway (because the minimum spend from the karters was high enough that their facilities were free), I didn’t lose out finance-wise from the non-arrival of most of them (I was expecting more like one spectator per karter, rather than the four that were actually there).
It’s also complicated by the fact we got special considerations from the organisers on the account that we had paid for more karters than actually arrived. It may not have looked like much on the surface, but the extra lappery would have cost me £15 extra per karter had I requested it when booking.
Better planning would help in future, as would getting the exact numbers confirmed at least 6 weeks in advance (Teamworks need final confirmation of numbers, plus the balance of payment, one calender month before the event).

amazing quote from ron dennis….
Q (from the audience). You’ve come over as a person of great personal integrity over the past year. Have you got any tips for people about that?
RD: I am just Ron, to everybody. I can’t be familiar and call you by your first name, but whatever your first name, we all have first names. We all have the same strengths and weaknesses as humans. Some people are very complimentary of the fact that I am self made. To me, the best thing about being self-made is that you have actually started your life in business with your values, and you grow on your values and you build a company on your values.
When you look in the mirror in the morning, what is looking back is the truth because you cannot hide from the truth. You can try and compartmentalise it, but you cannot hide from it. The truth is the truth.
So when you are tested against your values, the test is not just a public one. And as some of you have read, I am going through another one at the moment which is very challenging because it is a test that has its routes in freedom of speech and the protection a process gives you.
In this case, it is a legal process where someone can say anything they want about you and you have no mechanism other than to wait and to hope that the very people who have read about what you are supposed to have done and haven’t done, are the same people who are going to give you the opportunity to speak the truth. This is what life is about.
In the end everything is a test. The thing when people say, ‘What did you see in Lewis?’, what I saw in Lewis was the focus, the commitment, dedication, confidence without arrogance, and also the ingredient that manifested itself over time, which is the ability to make sacrifice. To achieve in life you have to make sacrifice, and sacrifice in everybody’s life comes in different forms.
So when you are tested on your values, you just have to call on the fundamental principles by which you have been brought up to believe in. In the end whatever the price, whatever the price, you have to be prepared to pay it.
Our company suffered a phenomenal fiscal penalty that would normally bring any organisation of our size to its knees, but in the end the one thing that came out – and we are not judging ourselves but we are judged by those people who really immersed themselves in the situation and really analysed everything about it, I believe the company emerged with its integrity, and I emerged with my integrity, and to me that is a priceless thing. Priceless.

I started off trying to brake into the apex which is a stupid thing to do with a kart any way and ended up braking very early and very lightly on the straight where there was some grip and turning in on the power which you are meant to do on a kart anyway.

Sure, I can fully understand you want to keep yourself anonymous and I respect for it. You can’t not do the things you want to do. While I know you didn’t want your face and name revealed you can’t tell me that you did not thoroughly enjoy yourself karting or meeting Lou at Goodwood.
Also I agree with Alex’s comments. You should not cut back your contribution in any of the shows. You and Christine have a very good double act and on the live shows whether it was intentional or not you provide the link between Christine and the rest of us.
For every person who will recognise you there are several who will recognise Christine and put 2 and 2 together. Also you have a distinctive voice and laugh so unless you plan to spend the rest of your life in silence 100 yards from Christine you are condemned never to leave sidepodcast towers again. Hey everyone.
I’ve just been reading through the comments and I’m sorry to hear Mr C’s anonymity has been breached.
But on the other hand I suppose this is not an issue that will last very long out there and will quickly be forgotten by anyone that has little or nothing at all to do with SPC.
I have to echo the other posters in that it would be a very sad thing if Mr C were to diminish his contribution to the show.
I know the podcast is supposed to be all Christine and by no means do I want to meddle with your affairs or with how the Debrief is to be put out there. But as I’m sure you are aware we all appreciate and enjoy your contribution to the show.
I mean, I don’t think you can really expect to contribute on a show and grab as little attention as possible. You’ll always get some exposure and eventually some people will find out who you are. And in time some of them will probably also forget.
To decide to diminish your contribution because of a few people finding out your identity seems a bit harsh to me. Do not get me wrong, obvbiously you are still the boss of you and it’s inpossible to argue with the way you feel about this, but I’d say you give it some time to let this blow over before deciding on your future on the show.

I think the current formats work very well, with Christine doing the majority of the presenting/podcasting and Mr C joining in the Debrief and Panel shows. The debrief shows are made by the interaction between the both of you.

ooo i’ve had an idea. buy a Michael Schumacher hat, no one will ever think it’s you cause you don’t really like Schumi
I agree with Steven, i wouldn’t let it stop you doing what you want to do. It would be a shame if you were not to meet some of us because of this. maybe we ever want there to be a future Karting event it might just be a spc and friends event? that way everyone is aware of spc and will know not to take and put up photos of you. That way the only people you expose your identity to is the people you chat to most days online anyway
either that or it’s stated before hand so not spc people know? but i can understand that this may have made you rethink things.

Mr C’s anonymity has been breached.
Welcome whoever will be joining me on -1,000,000 points on the next panel. Could be a great fightback, Jimmy Glass style.
I’ll be honest, I don’t really want my face on the interweb, or for that fact, my real name. (Damn that BATracer). Didn’t want to click the link cos I like to think what the big guy looks like, adds in the fun of him, I do enjoy Mr C on Debrief. My opinion is if your gonna do a good long show, you gotta have two or more people involved (obv. excluded Digest, Mini’s etc). I don’t wanna see Mr C lurk back into the shadows, I wanna see Mr C behind the camera, in the panda suit giving us what he’s got.
Mr C does a lot for the show, my lord a lot, the site, a lot of things. And I’ll credit it for him.
Actually, this is turning into the facebook ‘Mr C Appreciation Society’ here, so I’ll get back to anonomoninity
I for one don’t know what you look like, still convinced your the Mayor of Cheshire
and called Rob. But of course, I’m only kidding when I say that. Hell, I could walk into you doon the high street, share obsenities between each other, come back on and realise it was you and I
Don’t restrict yourself, the people who you will end up seeing at Silverstone, the Lou’s, the Dank’s of this sidepodworld, would have seen you before, I think, unless you dress like a pit mechanic for Renault, or Five Live.
My dear lord can I waffle. Woulda been easier to say ‘Mr C rules, stay in show, stay anonomoys, I didnt see pic, you rule’
So do you Christine, you’ll get your chance to get a R.G Appreciation Post soon

Sorry old chap – you’re British. The word you need here is eccentric! To the rest of the world, this is expected from the British. So, you are in fact, normal!
I guess you still have your ‘less than total star struck devotion to Lewis’ to fall back on as a differentiator. Sidepodcast – No Sheep! (A reference to an Australian advert for Pedders Suspension – their slogan is No Bull!)

I have a feeling I’ll be asking a lot of people in costumes if they’re ‘me’ at Silverstone…
I shall prepare myself for the irritated and slightly worried looks I’m likely to get back.

Lol
There are a couple of trade shows I refuse to go to, because they want to see photo ID for entry…
(although, that’s mainly because I abhor the creeping ‘ID’isation of everything and this idea that its normal to give away youself to ‘get’ something – especially when the person doing the getting and getting the benefit (in this case of *me* spending money with people who have paid money for a stand) is *not me!*
