F1 Digest - Singapore Free Practice

Sidepodcast F1 Digest logo

Our first look at the Singapore circuit was a wonder to behold, as the drivers struggled to make it round in once piece, whether due to their own issues, or the bumpy circuit.

Free Practice 1

The lovely lights of Singapore are merely a backdrop for all the on track action as first Webber and then Barrichello mess up their first go at attacking the newest street circuit.

Free Practice 2

Whilst Barrichello and Webber take to the track, Glock and Fisichella mess it up, and Hamilton and Alonso continue to fight it out for the top spot.

Obviously it was wet in Spa, it always is, and the drivers struggled their way round two free practice sessions. Tune in to F1 Digest for a full round up of proceedings.

Free Practice 1

A slow start to the day, although we’ve seen worse, gave way to some pretty slippery laps and no major incidents. The laptimes weren’t particularly outstanding, and I don’t think anyone learnt anything from this session.

Free Practice 2

The predicted rain meant things got going very quickly, but the inactivity once the weather hit balanced it out a bit. Plenty of incidents as well, with many drivers meeting the barriers.

The Curse of the Bull that is Red

It’s a running joke in almost every single conversation about Formula 1 that Mark Webber is the unluckiest man on the grid. If he’s leading a race, his engine will blow up. If he’s in front of his home crowd, he will spin off spectacularly. If he needs the points, he’ll have someone crash into the back of him. If it’s just a regular day, his gearbox will fail.

My heart goes out to the guy, but I’ve been doing some thinking. It seems to me that he has made the biggest mistake of his life by joining Red Bull. The unluckiest man in F1, joining the unluckiest team?

Let’s discuss.

First, I’d like to wow you with some facts and figures.

In 2005, running two cars, RBR suffered 9 retirements. In 2006, it was 12. In 2007, it was up to 14. One race in to 2008 and they’ve already notched up 2. (Yes, alright so did a lot of teams, but stay with me, here.)

Sister team Toro Rosso had 8 retirements in 2006, 17 the following year and 1 so far this year.

Another Day, Another Guest Post

It’s seems like all I ever do these days is promote the work Christine is doing on other websites.

Today’s no exception, because her first guest post is now publicly available on vee8. The subject this time is Mark Webber’s new BBC column.

For those not aware, this site is a spin off from frequent commenter doctorvee’s personal blog. The doc has long been a serial F1 blogger but realised recently that he created enough F1 content to stand up on it’s own and vee8 is the result.

In a behind-the-scenes special, Sidepodcast takes a look at Red Bull Racing’s Faces for Charity campaign. This initiative saw more than 30,000 F1 fans sending in personal photographs to replace the racing cars traditional livery.

With insight from Mark Webber and Christian Horner, Christine talks you through how this amazing idea, that managed to raise over $1,000,000 for the Wings for Life spinal cord research foundation, came to life. From uploading her photo to a website all the way to the cars hitting the track.
